Notevoli anche i bassisti: Jaco Pastorius, Gary Willis, Alain Caron, Viktor Wooten... In particolare, ricordo che con il mio insegnante di composizione ascoltammo Word of Mouth di Pastorius con la stessa attenzione con cui si può ascoltare il Concerto per orchestra di Bartok. Un paio di anni fa assistetti ad un concerto tenutosi al Piccolo Regio di Torino in cui suonavano proprio Alain Caron al basso acustico, Frank Gambale (chitarrista jazz-fusion famoso per i suoi trascorsi con Corea) ed Otmaro Ruiz al piano. Caron (anche se lo preferisco nella versione Uzeb) e Ruiz mi erano piaciuti moltissimo al contrario di Gambale sempre e solo alla ricerca dell'assolo ai 200 all'ora. Tant'è che alla fine del concerto, tornando a casa con amici, ci domandammo per quale motivo un virtuoso dovesse sempre e comunque ostentare tecnica e virtuosismo a scapito del fraseggio.
